Everything I'm Thankful For Gambrel_zps24fa3518

A two-story gambrel on the outskirts of Winter Harbor Maine was surrounded by the still quiet of morning in a town of less than 1,000.
However, inside the home, there were signs of something lively going on.

Awake like a bird with the sunrise, Adam squealed for breakfast. He still didn't sleep more than a few hours at a time, though his habits were becoming more scheduled and predictable.
The little blue-eyed boy barely had to make a peep. Kelly let Eve stay asleep in their warm and cozy bed, smiling as he slipped away and went to their son's room a short walk down the hallway.

"Come on, small fry. Let's surprise mommy with some breakfast. She was up late convincing you to go to sleep."
Adam stopped fussing as soon as he heard his father's voice, and focused on the face that was so similar to his own hovering above where he slept.
Kas scooped the infant up in one arm, and wandered downstairs, yawning while he got his bearings.
This seemed almost like walking around in a dream-world. It was certainly too good to be real.

The small town knew nothing about any of them, and accepted their fake names with a smile. Locals at the supermarket commented that they were 'such a cute couple', and pointed them in all kinds of directions for babysitters, pediatricians, and anything else young parents with a new baby needed to know.
Kas was already staking out a few restaurants where he would try for a job, even though he was sure he and Eve still had more than enough to live on for a few months.
They were fitting right in to 'normal' life.

"Alright, bottle first! Then.. some scrambled eggs with jalapeno. What do you think, little guy?"
Adam's response was a big toothless smile and blowing a spit-bubble, which caused Kelly to chuckle while he got all the needed materials out.

Evelyn was tired. When she had first learned that she was pregnant with s child, she wanted to have an abortion. She couldn't risk having the child of someone else,a monster. And she was actually really young. How would she take care of a baby, when she was a baby herself?
Though things changed when she found out that the baby was none other's than Kas'.That was the moment when she forgot about being young, and especially, about the abortion. She wanted to keep that baby, even if Kas was going to leave her take care of it on her own.But she was more than happy when he promised her that he would stay.He had promised he would never leave her a long time ago,and he still kept his promise. It was a nice relationship. With its ups and downs, but all in all, they loved each other, and their little blond angel.

Last night,it was one of the most tiring days she's been through.Young Adam just didn't want to sleep, which made Eve stay awake most of the night, trying to get him back to sleep. She knew Kas wanted to help, and she appreciated what he did for her and Adam, that's why she never made him wake up in the middle of the night to feed him. That was her job, after all.
It was a nice thing to do.Watch your little angle lie there in your arms, looking up at you as you feed him,and then watch him slowly drift off to sleep. And even if it was tiring,Evelyn knew that she wouldn't change it for the world.

When she finally achieved getting Adam to sleep, she dragged herself to bed,and crawled in Kas' awaiting arms, falling asleep immediately.
She lobed how Kas understood what she was going through, and just watching him waiting for her to get back to bed was enough to make her smile and drift off happily.

She woke up in the morning to find Kas not in bed,and Adam not crying, which made her worry. What the heck was wrong?
She jumped up,still dressed in her awful pjs,and ran to Adam's room.He is not here..,she thought.
"Oh my God!"
She quickly went out of the room and ran downstairs, ready to kill whomever dared to touch her baby, only to see Kas,holding Adam who was feeding.
"Oh dear Lord,Kas!Are you trying to give me a heart attack here?"

She groaned and walked over to him, rubbing her eyes and yawing, finally understanding how tired she really was."Sorry,I just..I woke up,didn't find you in bed, didn't hear Adam crying, ran to his room, didn't find him there and...I just got scared...I thought they found us again.."
She went and sneaked in his arms along with Adam, wanting to feel the warmth of her man.Of the only person that she had really loved."I am glad I have you both..",she mumbled into Kas' neck, and kissed Adam's forehead.

Footsteps upstairs drew his attention, but Kas stayed where he was, cradling a warm little bundle that appeared to have a very big appetite this morning.
Adam sucked down most of his bottle before Kelly even knew it, all without stopping for a breather.

"Are you in a race?" He asked his blue-eyed baby, not expecting any kind of response.
To Kelly's surprise, Adam released the bottle and turned his head ever so slightly.
Kas was a little wide-eyed, about to question if the infant actually understood him; until Eve walked into the kitchen.

"I see how it is.. Mommy's here and now I'm obsolete."
He chuckled, putting the bottle back to Adam's lips to see if he was still interested. Nothing seemed to be able to tear his attention away from watching Eve coming closer.
Her presence brought a warm smile, and Kas happily made a little room as his one-and-only snuggled up close.
"I am glad I have you both.."

"You say that now, but wait.."
Giving one of his typical sly grins, Kas kept his face about an inch from hers.
"One day him and I will come home from playing outside all covered in dirt and grass. We'll track mud everywhere, and devour everything in the fridge."
He stole a quick kiss on the lips before Eve had a chance to answer, and squeezed her waist with one arm.

"You say that now, but wait.."

Evelyn looked up at him questioningly and raised an eyebrow as a small smile crept on her face at the sight of his smirk. She knew Kas was up to something, and she knew that this meant trouble, but for some reason, she was excited about it.
"One day him and I will come home from playing outside all covered in dirt and grass. We'll track mud everywhere, and devour everything in the fridge."

Before she had time to answer,Kas had stolen a kiss, which made her smile and carefully take Adam from his arms, and place him on his chair, before pulling Kas into a kiss, and sneakily pinching his abs, drawing a chuckle out of Adam.
Eve turned to the baby and raised an eyebrow, laughing at his reaction."I see your son understands more than he should.."

She giggles and pulled her hair up in a messy bun, grabbing an apple and taking a bite before offering some to Kas."Thanks for feeding Adam..and letting me sleep some more.."
She took another bite and started dancing around the kitchen, getting Adam's attention right away.

Adam's eyes were riveted to the first person in his memory. Kas took a big bite of the apple, going after the same place Eve had already taken a comparatively small nibble, sort of like sharing an indirect kiss.

"She's pretty, huh little man?"
Kelly couldn't help but to chuckle as he watched the baby's eyes track his mother around the room.
"He does understand more than he should. It makes me wonder."
Of course, Adam had the 'benefit' of Mackenzie explaining some of the whole wide world already. Though for a tiny helpess infant; he was learning and growing quickly. Already, he was doing things normal for a baby a month or even two older.
"Do you think he's always going to be such a whiz-kid? We might be out of our league here."

Not that Kas was terribly surprised. Although, he knew there was the great possibility of surprises down the road.
"Yanno.. I've been thinkin.."

The fact their son would have mutant abilities was probable; if not a gaurentee.
Three known generations of the X-gene were coming at him from Kelly's side, and there was Eve's pyrokinetics added to the mixture.
Normally, a mutant would develop their ability as they reached adolescence; though there were many things not normal about this relationship, and the child it produced.

"What are we gonna do if Adam is like Loika's little girl?. You didn't know you were already pregnant when they nabbed you. What if they.. did something?"
If they did, it would definately explain the mysterious disappearence of Eve's powers until Adam was born. Kas didn't remember Loika losing any of her abilities while she was carrying Mackie, other than naturally being unable to shapeshift. She still had her healing- otherwise Loika would have certainly died after her baby had literally been cut out of her.

Evelyn felt nice knowing that she had both her men's attention. Adam seemed to love her a lot, which was, of course, a natural thing, but there was more to it. She could feel it, and that went for Kas too. Adam didn't just love them. He understood them, which made Kas' works sink in more effectively, and get her to think a lot more things than she was planning to.

"Do you think he's always going to be such a whiz-kid? We might be out of our league here."

Evelyn stopped dancing and placed the apple on the table, suddenly feeling full. She had, of course, thought about it, and she really didn't mind, but she knew Kas, and something was bothering him. There was something behind all this, and Eve was ready to face it.

"Yanno.. I've been thinkin.."

"That he could be a mutant too? Yes, he could be. And I wouldn't mind, really... but... I have a feeling something is bothering you... Is something wrong? You know you can trust me baby.."
Evelyn walked over to Kas, caressing his cheek softly with the back of her palm, and trying to give him a reassuring smile. But she didn't know whether she could do that.
Adam was growing faster than they expected, and understood way more things, which made it more and more possible that he was different..

"What are we gonna do if Adam is like Loika's little girl?. You didn't know you were already pregnant when they nabbed you. What if they.. did something?"
Evelyn sighed and pulled him in a hug, one hand wrapping around his neck, while the other rubbed circles down his back. She knew he was right, and she hoped that nothing would happen, but could she be sure?
"Kas... baby... look at me... I know... I know that there are million of chances that something could go wrong and..."

Evelyn couldn't say it. She knew that there indeed was a chance of something going wrong. And that meant that Kas, might be losing both of them. But she didn't want to say it. She didn't want to think of it.
"The doctors said he is perfectly fine... that he is healthy...,"she said and pulled back to look at him, tears now slipping down her face. "Whatever happens... we'll be here... we will always love you..."

"Thanks hotness. I know our boy is different. Normal is overrated anyway." Kas said with a small smile, feeling the chill of worry melting away the longer Eve was close. He brushed the tears from her cheeks and looked over at their son fidgeting with the baby seat where he was avidly watching them from.

"I don't mean to worry you. It's just a feeling that's been eating at me.."
Sometimes it was hard to tell if those 'feelings' were unfounded paranoia, or a subconsious warning.
Kelly had no idea it was so frightening to wake up realizing he had something to lose. A lot of very important something.. and he knew if he lost them, life would never be the same.

"Can't stop thinking that some kind of disaster is waiting around the corner. It's stupid.. I feel like a child afraid of the boogey-man under the bed coming to get us."
The age-old addage that 'you don't know what you have until it's gone' was creating an impression on the young man that grew up with nothing but himself to rely on. In a way, he already missed his new family; the the point of irrationality. It was the reason he whisked them away to Maine, and the reason he was seeing Eve's angelic face tear-streaked in fear and rage in his sleep.

His job would call on him to leave the house every day, and Kas wasn't sure if he could put away his worry long enough to concentrate on anything.
Was this just the instinct of a new parent kicking in? Or was he really starting to lose it? He hugged Eve tight and laughed off such panicy notions.

"Haha. I'm sorry sweetheart! Here our son is trying so hard to get your attention and I'm the one being a big baby. What do you want to do today? We could take Adam to see the ocean from Schoodic Point. It's supposed to be a nice walk."
Not that Adam could really care less about the view of waves crashing on the rocks, but for a lovey-dovey couple with a new baby, it was a peaceful getaway.
