Current plot
Many years ago Xavier's school for gifted mutants was attacked. It was left in ruin. Teachers and students abandoned it with no hope of returning to it for sanctuary...

Years later a professor named Jason Andrews returned life to the school's halls and rebuilt its walls. Students have once again come to learn at the school in safety.

Many other mutants aren't quite so lucky. Some still remain hidden in the shadows and some within factions like the brotherhood are left leaderless.

The death of his loved ones, still lingered on his mind. It seemed like a distant memory, but was in fact too clear of an image seared into his mind. Jason wanted to forget, however hard he tried the image wouldn't go away. Still, it was something Jason wasn't going to be fast to forget. If only he didn't care, maybe distanced himself from these kids, none of that would have happened to him. Maybe he wouldn't have to watch anyone die, maybe he wouldn't shed a tear for anyone.

"Meet me at the coffee house outside at Time Square." Jason sent a message to the woman he had no doubt would be the next Headmistress of Xavier. Jason needed time to think, time to grieve about the fact that one of the student is gone and was never coming back. He sipped his hot coffee, watching cars go by and people walking to their daily lives. No one knew what happened that day, no one cared about what had happened that day. They were so small compare to Jason.

Athena exited her car at the coffee shop Jason's message had instructed her to meet him at. She knew about the loss of Peter. His loss effected the entire school. They were a family, and to lose on of your own was just like losing a family member. Even if she wasn't super close to Peter and his family, a loss is a loss, and as a professor, she almost felt like a mother to many of the students that walked the halls at The Institute.

Spotting Jason at one of the tables outside the shop, she walked up and greeted him as brightly as she could manage giving all that had happened in such a short time. "You requested to see me, Jason?" she asked, taking the seat across from her boss and Headmaster of Xavier's.

Jason placed his cup down, "Thank you for coming on such a short notice." he said. His nervous hands kept on flipping his phone in his hand on a table. The pain hasn't gone away and Jason didn't know how long it would be before he recovered from such a loss. The memory of that day, was eating away everything he had ever remembered about Peter.

As Athena took a seat, Jason stopped his flipping and folded his hands on a table. "I need your help, Athena." said Jason, looking down at the table. What he was going to tell her, wasn't going to be easy, but he had to. There was just no other way out. "I am leaving the school for a while," he begun. "As I am sure you know, death of Peter has affected me greatly and I can no longer perform the duties of the headmaster. I want you to take over. I have noticed how many students look up to you. They listen to you and I believe you would be a great Headmistress." said Jason, trying to keep it together.

Athena tipped her head as he thanked her for coming. When the waitress came to see what she would like to drink, she ordered a tall Chai Tea. As the waitress left to get her drink ready, Athena turned her attention back to Jason. She could almost feel his emotions radiating off him. He said he needed her help and then told her that he was leaving the school for a while, which she understood. She was actually surprised that he hadn't taken a leave of absence before now. What he said next, though, stunned her.

I want you to take over... Her sea-green eyes dropped to her hands which she folded on the table-top. The waitress brought her tea, and she thanked her. Wrapping her hands around the warm cup, she let what Jason told her sink in. What he said she believed. Her office had an open-door policy, and many students took advantage of that whether it was for schoolwork help or just to chat about troubles. Bringing her eyes back up to him, Athena said, "I'm honored that you feel I'm worthy of taking your place, but.... This is just until you come back as you plan to come back.... right?" Jason did say that he was only leaving for a time. So, this change would likely be until he came back. At least, that was what her mind told her.

Jason's coffee was getting cold, he needed a refill. Pushing his hair back with his hand, he looked at Athena was painful eyes. "I don't know how long I will be gone. I might even--" said Jason, but stopped before he could finish the sentence. "I just need time away from all this chaos, you know? This city of New York is--it's filled with pain. No matter where you turn, there is always someone dies. And you want to help them--you try your best to help them--but they push you away, because you are not the same. I just can't do this anymore. I don't want to care anymore. I don't want to be responsible for anymore lives. One would think it's easy, but it is far from easy." a waitress came around his table and Jason asked for a new cup of coffee. "You will do just fine in charge of everyone. Don't be too soft on them, because like me, you will end up being hurt and your heart broken by someone."

Athena's features softened as she listened to the pain in each and every word he spoke to her. She knew that Peter's death was hitting him hard, but she didn't realize just how hard until he spoke about death and how no matter what you do, more often then not, there was nothing you could do. But, Athena knew that death was a part of live and there was no stopping it. Try as you might, as hard as you might, death will happen when it will...

Drawing a deep breath, Athena thought about what he was saying. Yes, he was taking a leave of absence, but that leave could be...indefinitely. His advice to not be too soft made her smile, remembering her first class with William who thought it best to disrupt her class and just how 'soft' she had been with him. Underneath her gentle surface, Athena was a no-nonsense kind of person, and that is how she would be here, too. A fine balance between caring and firm. "Peter's death has touched us all, but I know how close you were to him. If you feel that I should take your place, then... I will trust your judgement, Jason. But, are you sure that there isn't someone more qualified for this? I mean, I am relatively new to Xavier's..." Athena said, doubt coloring her words slightly as she checked with him to make certain that this was truly what he wanted: her taking over as headmistress.

"But, are you sure that there isn't someone more qualified for this? I mean, I am relatively new to Xavier's..."
Jason reached across the table and took Athena's hand, squeezing gently. "Athena, you have all the experience in a world, they are just kids, it shouldn't be too hard to handle them." Jason pulled away back and leaned against the back of his chair. "You will do just fine, I have faith in you." said Jason, smiling. Now that he has given the control over to someone who would do just fine as a teacher and Headmistress, Jason was all set on leaving. He wasn't going to pack, he wasn't going to take anything with him. "Thank you, Athena." said Jason as he stood up from the table. "I will see you."  He pushed away from his chair and with slightly lighter heart he began to walk toward the parking lot.

His job was finished. He wasn't going to care anymore, he just needed to be away from this city. This city of pain and hurt. Of evil and good. One that will never sleep, one that will always be at war with itself as long as mutants and humans waged hate on each other, there will always be dark clouds hanging over the city.

This is the end
Hold your breath and count to ten
Feel the earth move and then
Hear my heart burst again
