"You sound like a cynical senior citizen already, pup."
Kelly said with a touch of humor, though it failed to make things any funnier.
The kid had a point.. He sighed and let his head roll back on the couch. He couldn't watch the flashy colors on tv any more and tormenting the damn cat wasn't entertaining either.
"Even so,' he wasn't going to try denying it now. the brat was already in his head 'What am I supposed to do about it? Like you said, love is foolish."
The kid could see what he was relating to when he said the words, if she chose to. The thoughts were right there on the surface, as clear as a photograph. Him and Eve, Adam. How they started, and how everything turned out. The night they broke up. It was all because of foolishness. The notion that he could pretend everything was fine, when it wasn't, just for the sake of trying to preserve the love they had when there was nothing else to make it work.
"It's stupid to think I could just change who I am in the blink of an eye and be someone's dad, boyfriend, or whatever. I'm not a nice person.. just nice to certain people. When that runs its course, I'll make like a banana and split. It's better that way." A fair shade easier than her mom going to more funerals.
So he wasn't going to say 'no, Mackenzie. you're wrong', or try to incite any argument with the little girl. She already seemed to have a rational grasp of things, compared to the sentimental adults around her.
"You're totally right, on all counts."
