Never Meant To Hurt You - (PG-13)

Peter stood near a building, his back leaning into it and one of his feet firmly resting on a wall. He wasn't sure what to do anymore and where to go. Everything he thought he knew was long gone. Maybe, just maybe there was a glimmer of hope somewhere in the depths of this dark abyss that he would be able to find some light. If not, nothing would stop Peter from scorching this earth to the last ash to get what he wanted. He would do anything to get what he wanted the most.

Loika wrapped her scarf around her face a little more and let out an exasperated breath. She didn't like being stuck in this form. She was much warmer as a wolf. She had plenty of fur to keep her warm. Instead she was just a human  with a higher than normal body temperature. 

On top of that, she couldn't smell anything. Her nose was stuffy. The crud Stryker had given her cause her to less than her normal self. She had never had a cold before. 

She barely  noticed the smell as she was walking down the street. She was on her way the get groceries. It couldn't be....he was....

Her eyes widened when they fell on him. She stoof frozen. "Y-you're....I mean.....You're dead....how?"

The life he used to have. His family. What did happen to his family? Funny, how life threw weird curve balls. He has been missing for a long, very long time. Now, why was he coming back? Peter needed to know that his family was ok. But he couldn't bring himself to face the woman who gave up herself for him. 

How could he explain to her that he was just a weak man. It was easy to run from everything. But he thought he was doing the right thing. Was he?

Batting his eyes open and inhaling deeply, Peter picked up familiar smell. She wasn't the only one who was able to smell. The scent of hers was always in the back of his mind. It was just a matter until he recognized it again.

It was...Loika? She seemed just as shocked as he was. 

"Its the weirdest thing," said Peter. "I can't explain it."

Loika stood frozen for a second. Her wolf instinct was deciding on the fight or flight instinct. Part of her wondered of this was a trap. It wasn't like mutants were any safer than usual. She questioned if he could be a trap. Under someone's control? She had so many questions and no answers. 

She took a step back and turned like she was going to walk away. She stopped and stood with her back to him. She had only actually cried a few times. She could feel the moisture welling up in her eyes. 

"Everyone is gone. Sara is dead, I assume Jason too. Everyone who isn't dead is gone. There's a few kids at the school but even that is dangerous. Alot of them sleep at the he house. Even logan..." She paced a few steps and moved closer. She reached out like she wanted to touch him but stopped.  She paced a few more times before she moved in quickly wrapped her arms around his neck  and hugged him tight. 

Peter wasn't going to make the first move. He wasn't even sure it was his to make. It's been a long time since he has seen her last. Why didn't he come back sooner? Was he really protecting her or just himself? The burning questions exploded to the surface of his mind. He didn't know where to start.

Loika seemed confused about his presence. Yes, Peter was real. He was standing in front of her. Stepping back and forth toward him, she wasn't sure what to do. Then, beyond all comprehension, she flung her arms around his neck. Not what Peter expected. She should yell at him, tell him how much she hated him, ordering him to stay away from her and Mackie.  She told him the dark news. Everything he worked for so hard, destroyed in a matter of minutes. It pained him to hear that Sara has died. She was like a mother to Peter.

Slowly, without assurance, Peter wrapped his arms around her waist as he hugged her tight. Tears threatening to break surface any time. He fought them back hard.

"I am so so sorry," Peter softly whispered into her ear. "I should have been here, protecting you and Mackie. Is she still alive?" 

Loika didn't like being in charge of other people's lives. She didn't feel like she was capable of keeping them safe. She sure as hell didn't feel very strong. She felt like she had been carrying the weight of the world. 

She wanted to be angry with peter. She wanted to hate him and yell at him. But she couldn't. She was happy to see him alive. She missed him more than she had let on no matter how many times he had broken her hearr and left her with the pieces. 

She sagged into him and hugged him back tightly. It was almost like a clinging hug. She was so scared this was all real and when she opened her eyes he would be gone. 

"They would have to kill me to get to her. She's safe at the house. I kept her safe peter." She could feel herself shaking from a whole range of emotions. 

Peter sighed in relief. It was great to hear that she was well. Surely, she would be a bit bigger than she was last time Peter saw her. He knew that he couldn ‘t be forgiven easily, and knowing Mackie she would probably be angry at him for a long time. Maybe even forever. Peter couldn’t bring himself to face her. He didn’t have the right words put together to explain to her what it is he did and where he disappeared to.
 
“I am so glad she is ok. We need to fight back with everything we’ve got. Jason wouldn’t want to see all the hard world go to waste. Sara would want more than this chaos,” said Peter. He pulled back from the hug and looked at Loika. “Someone has to lead The Resistance. But first I have to talk to Mackie.”
