It was late, and rainy, and cold. Yet Kas said they should go to the harbor. The walkways high on the banks of the Hudson river were miserably dreary, and the waters stretching out below were choppy.
There was no point in an umbrella. The indecisive breeze would tear it out of the holder's grip, or turn it into a useless tangle.
Kas brought a black leather jacket to keep the pelting ice-water drizzle at bay, though ultimately he didn't seem very bothered with the chilly, stormy night.
They parked in the slight shelter of an overpass ramp on a flooded patch of grass, and were greeted with mudpuddles surrounding the car. Leaving the vehicle behind and huddling close as they made their way across the streets, a view of Staten island rose in the gloom ahead.
They stopped at a spiky, iron fence with an intimidating sign.

On the other side was an eroded concrete landing, hanging onto the beach. Hooking out into the water was an enormous wall of rocks that managed to keep the battering waves back.
While they stood there in the freezing rain before a sign that clearly told them not to proceed, Kas smiled calmly and asked her.
"Would you like a hand over?"
The fence was only about waist high, but there was a five foot drop to the slick pavement on the other side.
